BMW Plots Rugged Rival to Mercedes-Benz G-Class for 2029 Launch

Munich, Germany — BMW is quietly preparing to challenge one of the most iconic off-roaders in the automotive world — the Mercedes-Benz G-Class — with an all-new, off-road-focused SUV slated for production in the second half of 2029.

A Codename With Weight: BMW G74

According to sources close to Automotive News, the project, internally dubbed G74, will be assembled at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant on a modified version of the BMW X5 platform.

Unlike the performance-oriented BMW XM, which thrives on asphalt, the G74 will prioritize tough terrain capability, durability, and a rugged image. The XM will reportedly be discontinued in 2028, freeing up production capacity for the new flagship off-roader.

From X5 xOffroad Package to a Full-Blown Off-Roader

BMW has already hinted at a shift toward serious off-road engineering. The X5 Silver Anniversary Edition introduced the xOffroad Package, which features:

  • Locking rear differential
  • Multiple off-road driving modes
  • Reinforced underbody protection
  • All-terrain tires

While these upgrades give the X5 more trail ability, the G74 will go far beyond, embracing a squared, expedition-style silhouette that signals its hardcore off-road intent.

Why Not Fully Electric?

Although the next-generation X5 will offer both combustion and electric variants, early indicators suggest the G74 will focus on gasoline and hybrid powertrains.

Market data backs this move:

  • Electric G-Class → Average of 41 days on dealer lots
  • Gasoline G-Class → Average of 16 days to sell

For a luxury adventure SUV, the appeal of a traditional combustion engine remains strong — especially for buyers seeking long-range reliability in remote areas.

BMW’s Answer to the Mercedes Icon

The BMW G74 aims to become a “halo car” for the brand’s off-road lineup, combining:

  • Cutting-edge BMW technology
  • Durable mechanicals for extreme terrain
  • Luxury features expected in high-end SUVs
  • A design meant to stand alongside expedition legends

If the project stays on schedule, the end of the decade will see Munich and Stuttgart facing off in one of the most prestigious corners of the SUV market — and buyers will be the big winners.
