Stellantis, one of the world’s largest automotive groups, is once again cutting back production in Europe due to slowing demand. Several models—including the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Dodge Hornet, Fiat Panda, Opel Mokka, and DS 3—are facing major sales declines, forcing the automaker to temporarily shut down key plants in Italy and France.
📉 Alfa Romeo Struggles to Find Buyers
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is among the hardest hit. Despite Alfa Romeo reporting a 33% overall growth in European registrations during the first half of 2025, the Tonale itself is underperforming.
- Tonale sales in Europe (Jan–Aug 2025): 10,840 units
- Year-over-year decline: -42.1%
In the United States, Alfa Romeo’s entire lineup is shrinking:
Model | Sales (H1 2025) | % Decline |
---|---|---|
Giulia | — | -32% |
Stelvio | — | -40% |
Tonale | — | -28% |
Total | 3,164 units | -34% overall |
The Dodge Hornet, built on the same platform as the Tonale, is also in crisis, with sales dropping 52% to 5,647 units in the U.S.
🏭 Temporary Plant Closures
To adapt to low demand, Stellantis is suspending production at several plants:
- Pomigliano, Italy
- Produces: Alfa Romeo Tonale, Dodge Hornet, Fiat Panda
- Shutdown: Sept 29 – Oct 10 (Tonale & Hornet)
- Shutdown: Sept 29 – Oct 6 (Panda)
- Poissy, France
- Produces: Opel Mokka, DS 3
- Shutdown: Oct 13 – Oct 31
⚠️ The Pomigliano factory is especially strategic, as it builds both the Tonale and Hornet for global markets.
📊 Stellantis Sales Performance in Europe (2025)
According to ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association):
- Total Stellantis sales: 1,192,746 units (Jan–July 2025)
- Overall decline: -8.1% year-over-year
📌 Breakdown by brand:
- ⬇️ Opel/Vauxhall, Citroën, Fiat, DS, Lancia
- ⬆️ Peugeot, Jeep, Alfa Romeo
🌟 Bright Spots in the Lineup
- Alfa Romeo Junior: A subcompact crossover (not sold in the U.S.) that has already received 45,000+ orders across 38 countries, becoming a rare success story for the brand.
- Fiat Grande Panda: Boosted Fiat sales in Italy by 31.7% this year, offsetting the decline of the aging Panda still in production.
🔮 What’s Next?
Stellantis plans to launch a facelifted Tonale in 2026, but expectations remain modest. Analysts suggest the company needs fresh models and stronger electrification strategies to maintain relevance in an increasingly competitive European market.
