BYD has unveiled the Racco, its smallest electric car ever and the brand’s first kei car, marking a new step in its expansion into Japan’s competitive EV market. The reveal took place ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show 2025, opening to the public on October 29.
Compact Yet Clever Design
Built specifically for Japan’s kei car regulations, the BYD Racco prioritizes urban efficiency and practicality. Measuring 3.40 meters long, 1.48 meters wide, and 2.00 meters high, it fits perfectly within Japan’s strict size limits for kei cars.
Its tall, boxy silhouette maximizes interior space, while sliding rear doors ensure easy access in tight parking spaces. The front end features a closed grille, capsule-shaped LED headlights, and a floating roof, giving the Racco a modern, futuristic look.
“BYD has chosen the kei car standard, and that’s a positive thing. A new phase of competition is beginning,” said Toshihiro Suzuki, president of Suzuki Motor.
Inside and Performance
The Racco’s cabin is simple yet functional, designed for up to four passengers. Every element emphasizes efficiency, comfort, and convenience for daily city commutes.

Competing in the Kei EV Arena
With a starting price of $17,000, the BYD Racco will compete head-to-head with Japanese favorites like the Nissan Sakura, Honda N-One e, and Mitsubishi eK X EV, all of which feature similar battery capacities and urban performance.
BYD’s decision to enter Japan’s kei car segment is strategic. The market values compactness, affordability, and energy efficiency, and the Racco checks all three boxes.
BYD’s Growing Presence in Japan
BYD began operations in Japan in 2023, introducing models such as the Dolphin, Seal, Atto 3 (Yuan Plus), and Sealion 7. The company’s dealership network is expected to expand to 100 sales points by the end of 2025, signaling its long-term commitment to the Japanese market.
The BYD Racco will be its most localized model outside China, carefully designed for Japan’s unique mobility landscape. Reservations open in mid-2026, with production dedicated exclusively to Japan—at least for now.
